Current Events > Whoa Destiny 2 is not what I expected

I figured I'd start playing with it being free on Steam. It just kinda drops you off after the short intro and doesn't really say what to do. I figured it would at least have a few rails to guide you through the beginning.

Also I started at Gear level 750 and I seem to already have all of my class skills unlocked? Like what the fuck lol.

I don't think I've ever felt more lost starting a game before

I don't think so... I just started the game, picked a character class and that was it.

I think that's all part of this new campaign to offer some of the content for free and catch up new players. It didn't use to start that way.

Oh weird, so it just starts you off ready to do late game content? Can I still play the story, is there even a point to playing the story if I'm already at 750 gear level?

so here's how destiny 2 works. you have 3 main things you can do in the game:

1. the story mode, i think you get access to the main campaign and two dlc ones in the f2p version of the game
2. random activities you can do on each planet (adventures, public events, patrols, lost sectors, etc)
3. multiplayer pve/pvp content (gambit, strikes, crucible, raids, etc)

each time you visit a planet you are placed in an instance with a bunch of other players, and everyone is doing their own thing. you can do mini-story missions (adventures, patrols), you can find hidden areas where you fight rooms of enemies, or you can participate in public events where a bunch of players can team up to do an objective. the top most planet, the tower, is a hub world where you can talk to vendors and get new quests (more on the quests in a sec)

there is also matchmaking content you can do. if you look at the planet select screen, the bottom 3 things (crucible, vanguard strikes and gambit) are different multiplayer modes. crucible is pvp, strikes are pve (3 player dungeons), and gambit is a hybrid pvp/pve mode.

basically what you'll be doing is these 3 main activities, and everything is book ended by quests, called pursuits. you can see them in the pursuits tab, next to the planets. a pursuit might be something like "win 10 pvp matches" and the reward is a rare gun. this is pretty much what you'll be doing endgame-wise, you find some content you enjoy in the game and then advance your quests as you play.

there's more to it than that but this is the gist. do the main pursuit on the earth area (EDZ) and that will get you a rare gun and kind of get you up to speed. then just land on the EDZ area and do random activities there, try out the multiplayer modes, etc. destiny is a game where you can do your own thing, some people like to do pvp only, some people like to do the raids, some people obsessively grind out pursuits, whatever.

When you spawn into the Tower after the intro mission you should be able to pick up or already have a quest that tells you to talk to various NPCs which will then give you further quests to show you where to go

However if you want to just play the campaigns open up your map in the Tower and find Amanda Holliday in the east, set a waypoint on her and go talk to her to start them. The Red War is the base game's campaign

I can play offline apparently on PC. I might try it.

So is it like Borderlands or a FPS Diablo but with random quests?

How bad is the running around/spawn rates for quests
Like in WoW it's "run for 3 minutes to area doing nothing but running, kill mob, run over for another 10 seconds, kill mob, wait 30 seconds, kill a recently spawn mob"

Not bad at all for most things
Nope, more complex than that but there are a few things that can be that simple.

there is aim assist on consoles, idk about pc

the quests in destiny 2 are more like background things, there arent really any "collect 10 boar tusks" type quests. it's more like you might have a quest such as "kill 20 opponents with headshots in crucible" and then as you play pvp matches you try and get headshots to fulfill this.

all the activities on the planet are static/individual to your game and stay there. most of them boil down to something like a mini campaign level. the exception is the public events that move around. these launch every few minutes so there is almost always one going on

You'd be wrong. Shotguns are great and even have a few slug variants. Only downside is their ammo capacity is shit.
