It's incredibly lucrative if you're good at it, duh

You're designing, through code, a product that your company can sell directly to consumers. If you know how to code well enough... then you're directly generating money for the company with your skills... and your skills are incredibly in demand.

because today's society is fucked up and it's one of the only jobs left.

Reporter? Writer? French/Spanish/Italian teacher? Shoe fixer? Leather worker? Freelance carpenter? etc etc etc. Those jobs are few and far between. Our ancestors did this sort of stuff but now it's gone.

You have a point. A lot of these people have degrees in random shit then they learned how to code so they could actually get a job

I don't think programmers get paid that well despite being so fundamental to the core development of a product. It's also one of those jobs where there's plenty of competition both locally and offshore.
