Forget the famous faces with unfamiliar voices, and the whirlwind of conflicting science-fiction tropes wrestling for your attention at any one given moment in time. Hideo Kojima has long attempted (somewhat unsuccessfully) to explain that Death Stranding was a game about connection, and it has taken a new behind-closed-doors demonstration finally gave me a clear idea of the intent behind his laboured explanations.

The thing that really stood out to me was just how simple this game is at its core. Death Stranding is a game about walking. As Sam Porter Bridges (or as you probably know him, Normal Reedus trapped in the uncanny valley), you are tasked with walking from the East coast of America to the West, reactivating various communication nodes along the way in an effort to spread a message of hope to a nation that has become fragmented and disconnected, taking the idea of unity to pockets of an isolated populous that trades in ambivalence rather than love. That is Death Stranding.

And so you will walk. You will retrace the steps of Amelie, daughter of the President of the United Cities of America, who embarked on her own East to West journey with a convoy sometime before the game kicks into gear. She did this in an attempt to establish a network of communication relays across the country, a network that could deliver a message of unity from her mother, Bridget, who also happens to be on deaths door. That message is that every problem in the world needn't be solved by force; instead, it is hope that can bring us all together.

Dude all of modern gaming except for Nintendo and indies are walking simulators. I don't get it. I guess gamers want that. Don't understand at all.

Do we have the plot yet or are we still piecing things together? Lots of very good theories that hold up so far.

The next paragraph in the article goes into it. I didn't quote it in case people didn't want to be spoiled.

Isnt there a key multiplayer element? Like players effecting the game as a whole? I dunno. Ill wait for more info and reviews. Not exactly a preorder game here...

Thing about Kojima is I'm never sure until I actually play one of his games whether he has totally lost it or struck genius.

The crazy thing is, I generally tend toward one or the other and I pretty much always guess wrong lol.

So since I'm feeling like he has lost it on this one, I will be paying close attention.

Supposedly things like dying in your game "pollutes" other player's games and vice versa. Kojima also said there's a mechanic sort of like the nukes in MGSV where the online community can collectively choose to do something specific that's really altruistic, but it'll permanently disable the online servers for everyone, or do something horrible and keep them running.

So it's like taking the synchronization points in AC and making an entire game out of that?

I've thought for a while that the gameplay itself would be pretty standard and most of the weird shit will have a gameplay logic to it.

Biggest thing I'm not sure about is how the world works since you are following a trail? Maybe it's an open world with a linear path?

I mean, even Kojima knows better than to release a game with a world your grandchildren can conceivably reach the boundaries of in literal 2019.

But yeah, I figured this game would be a massive expanse of of nothingness with occasional combat, and a whole lot of Kojima smelling his own farts, with 22hours of cutscenes

so you're saying people want to talk about the games content but not watch trailers? sounds stupid.

what they're showing is disproportionate, and may very well end up being the final representation of the game. but there's clips out there of combat, a boss, and a vehicle. seems weird to just act like that doesn't exist.
