Current Events > I started playing DmC knowing that it was a controversial game

I just finished Devil May Cry 4 and I want to play DmC before finally playing 5. I thought Dante was his most likeable in 4. He felt like more of a character instead of what people thought was cool in the 2000's and I liked Nero even better.

So I knew DmC was always controversial because it was taken over by Western Devs and he swears but I wasn't too worried since I wasn't overly invested in Dante or the world he's in anyway. How bad could it be?

Then I watched the opening credits that involve strippers, Dante in a strip club, Dante taking two strippers home and an implication he's getting a bj in a taxi and Dante having a threesome with the two strippers in his trailer. The opening scene of the game is him nude, hungover and drinking whiskey.

Oh. I get it now.

This game is fascinating. It's like a freak of nature and I've only played the first level.

The original version also had some absurd design choice like making enemies immune to weapon damage depending on their colour coding and not having a lock on button.

These things were mostly fixed in the "Definitive Edition"

It's fun, with cool bosses and good level design, but the spirit of the character and setting got obliterated.

No it doesn't. Dante was always edgy and goofy. Was far more cringe for him to act that way as an adult than as a teenager imo.

Yeah I'm playing the definitive version which from what I've heard is a solid game.

I overall think I will like the game. If this was a new IP it would probably be a cult hit. Hopefully Ninja Theory makes a game like it.

But damn I understand why fans would be pissed. It's hilarious how different the idea of 'cool' is to Japanese developers and American developers. That alone changes Dante so much.

It's also interesting how limbo is a thing. Japanese games don't really care how their world works. But the American developers want to give an explanation and a world that has explanations.

Oh how did I forgot the villain's woman follower who looks like a crack addict.

DmC has some of the worst writing in a video game that I can think of. The gameplay in itself is all right, but it somehow manages to be a stupider story than DMC 1-3 in all their half-translated anime glory

The story was pretty bad and did try way too hard to be edgy...but outside of 5, I think it had the best gameplay in the series at the time.

Technically no. I mean DMC3 did seem to show this his little business was down the street from a strip club.

But there's a big difference between implying it or joking about it and outright opening the game with it. I think it's primarily a difference between how Japanese and Western developers handle this stuff.

But those brief glimpses in chapter 2 made him look like a dad in a polo shirt.

it's a fun game, but there are people who take video games a little too seriously and possibly believe that DmC is what caused cancer to exist

I will say the grapple hook stuff is really fun. As are the axe and scythe.

Gameplay is decent but 3/4/5 are all better in that arena, and the characters and plot are just awful edgy nonsense.

The original series isn't necessarily good in terms of plot but at least it's fun and Dante is likable.
