I was trying to follow this over the weekend but the reporting just dried up.

Timeline as far as I know it:

Trump/America claims to have taken down an Iranian drone (jamming it in flight).

Iran claims that all their drones are safe and suggest that America shot down their own drone.

Navy talks about how they have evidence they took down a drone. At this point there are really four options: We knocked down a drone (likely), we shot down our own drone (unlikely), we shot down a third party's drone (unlikely), or no drone was shot down at all (least likely).

Then Iran comes out with videotape of a drone flying around taking pictures of the USS Boxer and friends after it was allegedly shot down.

Navy just stops talking about it.

It's at this point that it seems that we are possibly in scenario four. I wait for more information to come out. Countless articles about "Here's the new fancy tech we used to shoot down the drone". But still nothing from the US Navy about it. When Iran shot down our drone, they released footage/photos proving it. This morning Trump reiterates that we definitely shot it down.

????

I just don't understand what's going on here. Someone is lying but there seems to be no benefit to any of these parties lying.

They had more than one drone buzzing the same ships at the same time, but instead of mentioning that, the US just pointed out that they took down "a drone"?

And in response to the video they didn't say "Duh there were multiple drones"?

The ships don't just vanish. It could be older footage, or footage broadcast from the drone prior to being shot, or from the following day but at an acceptable standoff distance.

You're overcomplicating things looking for a conspiracy.

There are timestamps on the footage. You can say "Well they edited the footage so the timestamp was right" but we then again fall into the territory of why the US doesn't feel the need to prove them wrong, when we do so plenty often.

Who said anything about a conspiracy? There could have been miscommunication and now people don't want to admit that they were mistaken.
