I have an unusual opinion on this one. I believe that a word only has as much power as people choose to give it. I don't want it to have the power that it does, so I use it as a general term to describe anyone regardless of race or gender. (To myself, at least - I know that others don't feel the same way I do so I very rarely say it when talking to other people.)

Kinda how I always felt, especially since any number of once-socially acceptable terms have also fallen into the offensive category over time.
