I bet japan's pissed that foreigners are dominating their national sport.

Anyway, why are sumo fat? Like, is that part of the ruleset or ceremony or religious thing or did they just find out that gives them an advantage?

Yeah me too honestly. I've actually seen ESPN televise mini golf tournaments. Fuck that! Throw some gigantic fat fucks on a platform and try to push each other around. That's way better.

Yeah, I would've gotten into it a lot sooner if it got any kind of advertising, and I don't even watch tv.

Exciting times for sumo. Hakuho is the GOAT in the literal sense, no one else has ever beaten a thousand other men at the top division before, and that's just one of a dozen or so records he holds. And you know that's legitimate with no caveats, because sumo hasn't changed in centuries, for better or worse.

Tochinoshin went through some shit with his knees, but he's famous for his sheer strength, where he will lift other 400lb men and just carry them out of the ring.

They can't punch but they give concussions with those fucking slaps. The ring is an old type of clay, and falling on it isn't much different from falling on concrete. There's no weight divisions: A newbie, the lightest of the top rank, still managed to ring out a man 86kg heavier than he is.

Nnngghhh I think I wanna be a sumo sometimes. I've incorporated the stomps into my warm ups.

They're fat because having weight is very useful when it comes to stability and moving other entities, and also a significant defense against impact. Also, the copious amounts of food they consume helps them build muscle, and bone density.

Their fat bastardness is very different from a nonathletic fat bastard. They're all super ripped under that fat, and they train nearly all day every day. They gorge themselves and then sleep immediately specifically so they develop their fat, and that fat is actually tougher than normal fat. Also, they have no internal fat. None on their internal organs. Clean as a whistle inside.

I actually have to wonder if traditional exercise fucks them up a bit. What they do is more like marathoning, but the actual action they train for often lasts for less than ten seconds. I wonder if they've heard of HIIT?

I'm glad it's caught on, I hope it brings more attention to sumo.

Overhand and underhand are just the position of your hand relative to your arm.

Really, in Sumo, an overhand grip is just when you reach out and grab the back of your opponent's mawashi, and underhand is when you grab the front. Each method has different types of leverage and different strengths and weaknesses.

Hell, what would you even call that? Like a german suplex from the front, as a counter? Jesus, I should watch junior sumo more often. That kid's going places.

First match of the May basho has a similar spirit, this is a nearly 200lb weight difference.

Just one more thing: Fat is also a particularly good defense against nodowa, a thrust at the throat. "Having a neck" is considered a weakness in sumo.

also a small info dump: There are six major tournaments a year, called basho. 15 days of fights, one fight per person per day, round robin style with playoffs if there's a tie in the final tally.

There are no ties in matches. They go until there is a winner and loser. No redos or postgame adjustments.

Because of the odd number of days, and no ties, you are essentially forced into going up or down the ranking chart. Even rikishi with already negative w/l records for the basho will still keep trying, so as to not fall too far down the ranks. Their paychecks and perks all depend on it.

Yes. Hakuho might be better at Sumo than anyone else is at any sport. And you can see it in his matches, pulling ballerina dodge maneuvers at the edge of the ring, KOing people at the tachiai, he has a super heavyweight body but moves like an acrobat.

Videos will be late today, and in highlight reel form. That means the ceremony and postmatch review will be skipped, but you get all the actual fighting immediately and back-to-back. I think it's good, I didn't want to flood the topic with matches and scare off anyone potentially interested.

Just to be clear, it's not me getting the footage, these are all from YouTube's Jason in Japan.

This stems more from the fact that there was a betting scandal about a decade ago, more than anything. People involved in sumo betting on sumo? Yeah, it's not a logical leap to think maybe there was influence to rig matches.

While they never did prove that any matches were fixed, 11 people were fired or fined, a top rank Yokozuna was forced to retire, and governing policy got even stricter. Japan as a whole really, really didn't like that whole business at all.

There are a few roles in sumo are a dedicated craft that you take on for life via apprenticeship.
This includes the referees and sumo barbers.

Only the top ranked guys handle top division sumo. Just a few old men in the world are allowed to give those sumo that distinctive ginko leaf style.

There's been a trend of Mongolians dominating sumo, ever since foreigners were allowed. Of course it was controversial at first, but people have adapted, and sumo fans love their champion yokozuna. Tochinoshin, my favorite rikishi and possibly the best lifter in Sumo, went through some serious injuries and recovery since September. His return to form was met with high applause, and he has a notable fanbase.

Should be noted that all current Yokozuna are Mongolian.

If you have NHK they show highlights of the day during every tournament. The matches are quick but exciting.

I enjoy it and watch every chance I get.

When I lived in Japan I went to a stable (gym) to watch the wrestlers train. It's tough to work your way up in the stable. These guys are surprisingly flexible too.

Today's matches, from another source this time.

You might notice in today's Tochi match that he goes for this kind of uppercut to the chest. The equivalent of a bolo punch in sumo, but only the strongest guys with long arms go for it. Hakuho pulled one last tournament that sounded like a tire hitting pothole, nasty stuff.
