It's pretty, but it's much more straightforward than the show, and can't really surprise you the way that original did. Anno is not in the headspace he was with that original show, and some people will definitely notice and dislike that. It's all a lot of small deviations until the middle of the second movie. And even then many of those changes have yet to pay off. Some characters are closer to their manga interpretations than their anime ones, and that's fine with me too. I think this is mostly a function of having to cram 26 episodes into four two hour movies. The passage of time does feel weird though. There's also a new character, who seems to exist solely to sell merch, and that's kind of just trash. And I still don't know what to make of that third movie.

Cool things. Newly arranged soundtrack. There's a lot of classic EVA tracks here, but there are also some new ones and all of it sounds amazing. Every movie also releases with two versions of the soundtrack on which the songs are slightly different or even unique. If that's something that interests you, check those out. Also, yes. The show is really pretty. If you like high production values, it delivers.

Mostly just the third movie is Shinji at his worst. And the thing that shrine mentioned. Actually just the whole way it ended. **** the last thirty minutes. The other two are okay.

Start with the original series (with the directors cut episodes of 21-24). Then the End of Eva movie. Then the rebuild movies.

I enjoyed it, never watched End of and saw I think the 2nd reboot movie? I'm not as passionate as most since I was spoiled by other Gainax-esque stuff

If you watch the first two movies, I absolutely love the rebuild. Then, 3.33 happens :(

Shinji just can't catch a break. As a character, he didn't deserve any of that. Anno is just refusing to let go of his personal issues and hatred in general. 4.44 could redeem everyone but I sadly doubt it. I'd actually be happy if it didn't end up as vaporware.
