it's been like 10 years since I played it last. Damn, it still good. I wish games now a days were this polished. That's what I've really been missing. The game sometime does have awful camera angles. You know the ones where you can't see where you are going. I didn't remember that. The random battles aren't that bad. They seem really far and apart. I wish games now a day where this big also. the sense of scale is awesome.

I never beat the game. I got to the last battle and lost because I didn't upgrade my gears and I couldn't afford the upgrades.

I never understood the opening. A Starship grows limbs and destroys itself and a girl comes out of the wreckage? What does that have to do with mechs and two country trying to find buried mechs.

That game had a surprisingly deep story compared to most other JRPGs I thought. Only other game that I felt it was on par with at the time mighta been Planescape Torment. That being said, it really bothered me how the second CD felt rushed. Granted I'd admit at that point of the game I just wanted to finish it and oddly enough it felt like the developers wanted the same thing and started to wrap things up.

Cliffs Notes version? The starship (the Eldridge) was transporting part of a combined biological/A.I. superweapon named Deus that had malfunctioned. It took over the ship and was trying to get back to the Eldridge crew's (and its creators) homeworld, presumably to exact revenge. The captain instead blew up the ship and it crashed on the world where Xenogears takes place.

The girl is the first Miang (technically, the first Elhaym, but Deus corrupted her, turning her into the first Miang and it's a really long story that's not important to this explanation) and she's looking out on this new world where she (and her 'master' Deus) have now been stranded.

She uses the salvageable systems and DNA from the Eldridge wreckage to create 'humanity' (humans on the Xenogears world). The mechs are just the newest weapon in a war, and the countries are trying to find buried ones to reclaim older, more effective weaponry or equipment.

I had the hugest crush on Elly back in the day, the only real waifu I ever really had, also solid game, I love that it boiled down to the tower of Babel except it's a mech that was so powerful that God punished man for threatening him

yeah I can see the love on elly. She is totally waifu material down to a T.

Ok on more praise for xenogears. Damn those camera angle and compensation is probably the best in any jrpg. I love the loading screen where it zooms in and out of showing how grand the areas are.

IMO it has Mitsuda's absolute best music. I had a TV capture card in my old PC, and I booked my PS1 up go it and recorded like 8-10 minute versions of some of the score.

Small Two of Pieces was probably my favorite song of that time. I know there were vocal in Final Fantasy VII with One Winged Angel but Xenogears really surprised me with Small Two of Pieces.

I need to play this, the combat seemed pretty solid the first hour or so I played but for some reason I just never bothered again.

it feels great. it feel punchy. I get that people say it's just spamming the same combo over and over again. but it feels really rewarding when you unlock a new combo and see it's animation. almost as rewarding as seeing a new summon in FF7... We will never get that many summons in a FF game again ='(

Though I didn't play it, I actually thought how summons were handled in Final Fantasy XV made more sense. Personally I thought it was weird that they were spammable in the earlier FF games despite being beings of enormous power which some characters, if properly geared, could out-damage.

I loved this game. It was the first RPG I 100% completed on purpose. You should take your time and upgrade everything as much as you can. Disc 2 can be brutal if you don't have the anti-angel system on all of your mechs.

Remember to take out the the sub-bosses before you take on Deus. It really helps and make sure Fei's mech is maxed out. Trust me, you will thank me.
