Board 8 > What is The Fury's weakness in MGS3?

He was.....alot harder than I remembered him being, but I never figured out his weakness

every Cobra has some sort of random weakness you can exploit

The Pain you can just straight up use the shogun on the bee armor

The Fear you can just feed him rotten or poisonous food

The End you can kill him in his intro scene or do the week trick

I seriously don't remember with The Fury

I was using The End's sniper rifle to cap him from afar but once you get him to half, he starts running down the hallways while shooting, so it becomes super hard to line up shots or sneak up on him from behind

btw I know I can look it up but I can't pass up a chance to talk about MGS3

it goes to show you how great this game is by talking about the dozens of ways you can beat bosses

Wasn't there red pipes all over the place you can shoot to dowse out the flames? Also I think you get a camo for knocking him out instead of killing him.

Yeah, that's true of every Cobra except for The End. You have to sneak up on him and hold him up to get his.

There were a few times where I DID sneak up on him, and I would shoot him with the Tranq and then combo him

he would yell "MY SUIT IS RIPPED"

but...it didn't seem to hinder him in the least

whats that supposed to do? I thought it was just random dialog

Yeah, The Fury doesn't have an instant win trick like the other ones do. Ripping the suit just makes it easier.

Although he's kind of a joke on replays if you get his camo because he can barely damage you.

Also you gotta sneak around him and stuff. Like many of MGS3's bosses he has weird protection from being shot head-on.

I was about to say it was something to do with mushrooms but that was Volgin. Hm.

Volgin has the Russian Glow Caps that absorb his lightning

also throwing A Tree Frog (instead of eating it, some days) scares him for some reason

wearing the Raiden Mask leaves him open for one hit

and I think shooting the pipes there can stun him

The Russian glowcap mushroom can absorb a lightning strike from Volgin, yeah.

If you throw a frog at him, he gets freaked out by it and you can get a free shot on him. Same with the Raikov mask, but it only works once.

I'm hesitant to replay MGS3 because my first playthrough was so fucking magic back in late 04 but I'm worried it hasn't aged well.

MGS3 has been my all-time favorite game since I played it the week it came out (and replayed it darn near every year since) for precisely this reason. We could easily fill a 500 topic talking about the seemingly endless secrets/tricks it has and swapping stories on how we utilized them.

One thing that I didn't realize when it comes to the fear is that if you give him poisonous food, it depletes his health but if you give him rotten food it depletes of stamina.

So it's probably a good idea to pick up some fodder food when you start the game and hold on to it until it goes bad. His fight is so super easy when you do this

I saved, paramedic brought up Dracula

I turned off the game, and it just started over. I didn't have the ration nor the fork in my inventory

I tried again but she didn't bring up Dracula again

The only thing that hasn't aged well in MGS3 is that there's no crouch walking, and it's probably the #1 game in the series that would benefit most from it with the camo index system it has. the 3DS port doesn't exist so it doesn't count, don't bring it up Aside from that, it's still as fucking amazing as it's ever been.

The Fury isn't bad in normal gameplay but I found him to be extra tough in one of the Duel modes (probably Special Duel) when going for the high score.

In this one run, I ate every animal

brought back the Tsuchinoko

didn't kill anyone

and didn't get spotted once

it was very restrictive

but the beauty of this game is that you can play it however the hell you want to and now I think I'm just gonna blast through it and play it like Contra on this 2nd play through

The most convincing theory I've ever heard on this is that it could have been Raikov, with the rationale being that "Ivan" is apparently pronounced Eva-hn in some languages. It is kind of funny that this is never explained considering some of the other minutia MGS breaks down in explicit detail, but I guess really it doesn't matter who it was.

All this reminds me that I picked up the HD collection on PS3 this summer so I could do an early-series replay and finally play 4 (and then move on to everything thereafter) but then I got my PS4 and never got around to it. <_<

It is probably the best aged PS2 game, by far, which is crazy since so many of those games aged well.

I'm not even talking about the HD Subsistence versions. The original fixed camera one is still so perfect. I've played it through about 15 times and the HD one once and it's really not necessary at all.

But honestly one of the greatest feelings in my gaming life was starting up MGS3 HD right after spending 50 hours on V. Literal orgasm.

Lots of the streamlining of MGS controls after 3 actually ended up making the games worse. V ended up being Crouch Walking: The Game. There was no reason to do anything else unless you were sprinting for distance. But in 3, every movement and stance had its uses. Having to choose between hiding and moving added a lot of tension to the game, instead of just crouch walk beelines from A to B.

4 had a good balance in its movements though, even with the crouch walking. But the instant camo also ended up less fun. Since changing camo was so annoying in 3, it actually became optimal to choose camo in such a way that you only need to change a few times in the entire game.

These are the things that make 3 so expressive and memorable in a way that some horse poop can't compare.

I thought it was made very clear that Eva WAS supposed to be the 2nd contact because they thought she was just a Russian double crosser as Tatyana?

EVA mentions in the debriefing that she was able to slip in because ADAM never showed up (except he did, but nobody ever realized it) and drops the reveal that both the real EVA and ADAM were men.

Oh yeah they were supposed to be men. Raikov makes sense in that case, but there was never any sense that he did anything. Granin would make more sense since he was supposedly killed as a scapegoat for Eva, but he also directly helped Snake the most so he could easily have been the true Eva.

Major only says that ADAM infiltrated Volgin's ranks and that he'll rendezvous with Snake. There's no suggestion that EVA is involved in any of this at all.

My first run through I was trying to tranq everyone, and I still had a few extras - one was someone who I tried to interrogate and accidentally pressed the button too hard (who puts "hold knife to throat" and "slit throat" on the same pressure-sensitive button?) and one was a guy who was standing near the edge of a cliff in Krasnogorje when I tranq'd him so he fell off the cliff and died. His ghost had like a vulture attacking him or something.

Was that really my fault? I didn't kill him, the fall did.

That was how I understood it too. When EVA first shows up Snake even says something about EVA not being part of the plan because he was only supposed to rendezvous with ADAM.

Yup! IIRC it was more than just you and I, there were a few of us playing through it at the same time back then.

Last year or so I watched an MGS3 playthrough on YT and it was fucking magical so I don't think you'd have any issues of it getting tainted.

they don't count as kills at the end results because they survive those fights canonically

I started the playthrough again and I can confirm that they mentioned there were two defectors, even mentioned EVA by name

but yea, you were only supposed to meet up with one of them, Adam

They didn't have to be working with Ocelot, they were just another defector. So there are various options.
