As someone who has seen over 30 Tarzan movies, Disney put a really unique spin on things. It was interesting to see Tantor, an elephant indued with almost mythical qualities, anthropomorphized as a timid and nerdy character who just happened to be the biggest guy in the jungle. And despite all of the talk of Tarzan being raised by apes, this is the first film I've seen to actually show it. The part where the mother gorilla attempts to carry him on her back like a baby gorilla, only to carry him like a human infant after he fails to cling to her, was a stroke of simple genius.

It was true to the spirit of the character, and borrowed freely from the original novel, but still managed to put its own unique spin on things and de-familiarize a story that has been told time and again throughout the 20th century.
