Gamefreak is never going to be forced to actually be a good developer, are they? They can just release whatever they bash out and it will sell like gold. How depressing.

Boy if it didnt have near-unanimous consensus for being well received outside of "real gamers" who had already decided to dislike the game to begin with I might agree with you guys

I haven't followed this, but this isnt anything close to the big budget, triple A console Pokemon game that fans have wanted for like 15 years, right?

It's basically an appetizer, or Pokemon Lite, intended to get more people to join the playerbase from Pokemon Go.

It's still a full Pokemon game, it just lacks some of the stuff added after Gen 1, like hold items, abilities, etc. for a more streamlined experience. And the biggest change is it uses Pokemon Go-like catching mechanics instead of battling wild Pokemon, which is fun enough for something like this.

They said a regular core Pokemon game is coming next year.

It's basically a direct remake of Yellow with not much of the stuff that came after Yellow outside of Mega Evolutions and Alolan forms.

That said, it includes something that is better than any other Pokemon game and I hope stays forever in that Pokemon appear on the map instead of random encounters and the next Pokemon game could be the greatest game ever made but I'd still be a bit disappointed if it went back to those.

For a game in general yeah, but not for a Pokemon game. That's only about a third of Sun/Moon's opening. Which I'm sure is still profitable, but not something that should be changing GameFreak's mind on how to make future games or anything drastic.

it's hard to compare because Sun and Moon was many years into the 3DS's lifespan already and on a platform that's much cheaper than the Switch is.

It's also the first ($60 equivalent) normal Pokemon game. It may be like a third of what Sun/Moon opened at, but the Switch is at like a fifth of the 3DS's sales

Well X/Y had a 1.8 million debut too. But it's true even then the 3DS was like a year further along.

But I imagine Nintendo is probably still happy with this given the surge in Switch sales, and it should continue on for the rest of the year. I guess we'll have an idea on what their expectations were when we find out the sell through rate. Theoretically they shouldn't have expected standard Pokemon numbers.

I think a bit more comparable is probably that ORAS had a 1.2 million debut, so Let's Go did about half that, roughly.

I do wonder how many extra sales were lost from people who were willing to buy both versions for $80 but not at $120.

I'd say the Pokeball Plus also scared people off from buying both a good bit, since it makes the game $100 if you bought the bundle, and you need it to get Mew, so I'd say a lot of people got it. Thus, to get that + both games, you're looking at $160.

EDIT: Granted, there's also not really a ton of reason to get both since Bank isn't on Switch. Nor is there the usual "cover legendary" difference.

Given the GBA's lower sales, the best comparison might actually just be FR/LG's 885k debut. I dunno if that would've been a Friday release back then though.
