Even with the meds I still get the manic highs where its like fuck money

Sounds like you need to up your lithium dose. Its important to follow up with a psychiatrist a lot when you first are diagnosed because psychiatry is not a super exact science.

I once dated a girl with Bipolar 1, and she was fucking insane. If your manic highs are mostly just fuck money then I feel like you can definitely get some help and live a normal life. Im no doctor, but that sounds way less severe than my ex. She would be ecstatic and overjoyed and bulletproof and the next day she would overmedicate with cough syrup and participate in fairly severe self-harm, sometimes requiring hospital stays.

I really dont know the ins and outs of treatment for bipolar, so honestly my opinion is pretty much worthless on this.

As for if it'll last for life? Yeah its a life long mental disorder. There is no cure for it mostly management of the highs and lows. Treatment of Bipolar with lithium usually works in 5ish days.

Yeah. It really kills the highs...a little too well. It seems to be the standard though.There are a few alternatives though and if he's having major depressive episodes there's usually also an anti-depressant given. Finding the right combo of anti-psychotic/mood stabilizer and anti-depressant can take time which is why following up with the psychiatrist until you reach that point is super important.

It depends on if "fuck money" doesn't run him into massive debt during a manic episode. Its probably affecting his life in some way.

Bipolar is fine. Took a few years to get my meds sorted right but now I rarely if ever have manic episodes. Just be patient.
