I would play the same handful of levels for about an hour then play something else. Every time.

i don't understand why that game gets such praise...its literally just playing the same level over and over and doing some menial task each time.."collect 8 red coins here...ok now go back to the same place and collect 100 gold coins!...ok now do that in every level!"..

..doesn't that shit get old?

It's a product of its time. It's not great by today's standards, but I try to look at it through the lens it was viewed in when it came out. It was an absolute mind blowing experience to move Mario through these 3D stages

That's every 3d Mario

Sunshine and Galaxy and Odessey do the same thing

Except additional mario games that came out after it follow similar patterns and people praise those like the next coming as well..they can be fun games, don't get me wrong, but really don't see what's so incredibly special about the post 3D mario series...

I couldn't tell you. When I say I would play the same levels over and over again, I mean literally the first few levels, turn the game off and eventually comeback and repeat that process. The first two platforming levels and the two where you do the sliding race.
The game was fun from what I remember but for whatever reason, I never felt the need to progress further than that.

I have an older brother who actually played the game proper and he would unlock stuff like the flying hats and I would use that to fly through levels and visit Yoshi on top of the castle.

If you think all 15 levels in that game look the same you better get your eyes checked. Seriously.

It was revolutionary. The ability to freely move around a 3d space with so much precision. Its still an amazing game.

I wouldn't call it "still amazing". you're right that its a product of its time and revolutionary for what it did. A lot of games were. doesn't mean they're all "great, amazing" games. Mario 64 is just a game that historically did some good things...as a game its not that great.

it's one of the few early 3d games to still hold up today. both in terms of looks and in gameplay. I think it's cause nintendo always uses timeless art styles

Crash Bandicoot was released 2.5 months later (two weeks earlier in the US) and it's MUCH better tbh

That game doesn't get enough praise.

It was superb back then and still holds up pretty solidly in terms of controls, but everything else doesn't really hold up as well. My nostalgia goggles don't do much for it. If we get a N64 classic, I probably wouldn't feel the need to play it.

The multiple stars per level thing was just necessitated by the limited cartridge space but I still actually prefer it over the one-off levels of Galaxy and other later games. One-off levels are kind of boring since there's only one or two things to do in each of them, where on the other hand having a huge map with any number of options and mysteries to solve you feel more like you're a part of that world and not just passing through it.

I think the big thing that makes it still fun nowadays is that the movement just feels really good, in a way that other 3D mario games don't quite capture (especially the galaxy games). Momentum feels nice, your various moves all blend into each other in a very fluid way, controls are tight and precise, that sort of thing. A lot of the levels really help this feeling by being semi-open playgrounds more than tight directed challenges and it lets you experiment with your different moves just to get around the level in a variety of paths / ways

I really enjoyed Crash! We had all the PS1 games. Spyro too while we're at it.
I've been considering getting those remasters for a while now.

Its the perfect platformer. Its aged better than almost every other game out there. I have no idea how you can speak poorly of a game thats widely concidered a top 10 of all time. Even if you dont like it. Its like saying The Godfather doesnt hold up as a movie because its been imitated and built upon for over 40 years.
