ugh

Gladiator is coming back to the big screen as Ridley Scott is moving forward with a sequel with Peter Craig ( Top Gun: Maverick ) attached to write, according to Deadline.

The first film ended with Maximus successfully killing Commodus, though also being mortally wounded during their fight and dying, joining his family in the afterlife and saving Commodus sister and son from her demented brother. The sequel will follow the son, Lucius, following Maximus impression and exposure of Commodus corruption.

What was the compelling part of the first Gladiator?

Phoenix's overacting?

The lack of adherence to actual history that destroys all emotional impact of the story (and which you were probably all super upset about in Braveheart)?

The washed out, fugly CGI?

The fact that the main character was named Maximus but it wasnt a porno?

The gay giraffe joke?

The overuse of music to manipulate emotions?

The criminal underusage of Derek Jacobi, fucking emperor Claudius!...?

The chariot fight scene was pretty cool, though.

I will always appreciate Ridley Scott for all the incredible movies he's made over the years, but it's time for him to take a break. He's turning 81 this month, is working on 10+ projects, and most of his latest ones have been duds.

If they're going to make a sequel now, it needs to be a spinoff. No Russel Crowe.

If they were making the movie back in the day, they could've centered the film around an army buddy of his and made it a sequel-prequel like The Godfather: Part II. The first half of the film takes place before the events of Gladiator, the second half takes place after. But since Russel Crowe is about 18 years older than he was when Gladiator was made, there's no realistic way to include him except as an off-screen voice.

What?

Gladiator could have been entirely fictional, and it still would have resonated with audiences. Maximus, according to the story presented, was a man who did everything right by his nation and people, yet still lost his wife and son to treachery. People want to see an injustice corrected and they definitely want to see an underdog be the one to make that happen. Any semblance to actual history is just window dressing, although it is probably true that ancient Rome is a romantic and captivating setting for a lot of people.
