Switch is probably as gimmick-free as it's gonna be

No.

Going by your definition all consoles this generation have gimmicks.

No.
Nintendo will not make a loss-leader, which is pretty much a necessity in the market nowadays.

This. The whole "converts to a handheld" thing is the least-gimmicky thing that a Nintendo console has done since the Gamecube.

I respectfully disagree, but it doesn't matter because that wasn't even what we were talking about to begin with. No one said anything about how good (or not) the Switch is. We were only talking about how gimmicky (or not) it is.

I don't know that I'd consider Switch a gimmick in the same way Wii and WiiU were, tbh. It's pretty much just a portable that can also be hooked up to a TV, like the PSP. The difference is the marketing more than anything else.

I'm waiting for a serious Nintendo console that will actually try to compete with Xbox and PS4.

Still have the Wii U and Switch though.

Eh, that'll never happen. Nintendo has been doing the "fun over power" thing for over two decades now.

The last time they owned the power contest was with games like the DKC series which looked outstanding for the time. A lot of Nintendo games from that era had some incredible music as well.

Then before that, their games were almost always the most faithful ports of the arcade originals. They also had much better quality control than everyone else, and lack of quality control over game releases was what led to the home console market crashing way back when.

Since those days they've really just been doing their own thing off to the side though, as early as the Nintendo 64. Still managing to be mostly successful at it aside from a few flops in recent memory.

After the Switch Nintendo really has no reason to develop a dedicated console or handheld anymore. Only exception is if they make some totally new concept again. But even that seems unlikely due to how versatile the Switch concept is.
