Donald J. Schneider and the iconic trucking outfit that bears his name, Schneider National, were both born in 1935 on the shores of Lake Michigan. In the depths of the Great Depression, Schneiders father, Al Schneider, sold the familys car and purchased his first truck. During his teenage years, Don worked in the family business as a mechanics assistant and later as a truck driver. As a Schneider National employee, Don paid his way through St. Norbert College, a small liberal arts college outside of Green Bay.

After graduation, Schneider spent 13 months on active duty in Korea before returning to the States to earn his MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon completing his graduate degree, Schneider returned to Green Bay to join Schneider National as a manager. Don succeeded his father as CEO in 1974.
