I think it would be cool if they incorporated those shmup sections into more 2D Mario games, actually. The Kirby games have had some neat shmup sections over the years.

I would like to see Tatanga, King Totomesu and Sarasaland (especially Chai Kingdom) make another appearance in a future Mario game someday.

It is kinda weird.

It's a completely new environment for Mario. Instead of Peach, we have Daisy. Instead of Bowser, there's Tatanga. Instead of fantasy, the game focuses mostly on science fiction.

For what it is, it works really well. It's better to have a different Mario game than a lesser one. The stylistic changes do a good job in masking the limitations of the Game Boy compared to the NES and Super NES.

I like speeding through it. It's not the best game, but it's really enjoyable. Some romhacks enhance the experience too, such as color hacks for Land and Land 2

Yeah, it's too bad we've never had any space-themed Mario games where it would have made sense to feature an alien as the primary antagonist instead of rehashing Bowser again.

Mario Land 2 owes a lot to Super Mario World and Wario has become a recurring figure within the franchise. It's a bit less out-of-place.
