https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/09/14/nintendo-cloud-save-data-is-deleted-if-your-subscription-expires

The ability to back up local game saves into the cloud is a feature Nintendo has long touted as a selling point for its Nintendo Switch Online service launching Sept. 18. Those cloud saves, however, will be lost if a customer allows their subscription to lapse.

"Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership," reads an FAQ on Nintendo's U.K. website. "Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership."

A similar FAQ on Nintendo's U.S. site essentially says the same: "Save data stored via the Save Data Cloud backup is available for as long as you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

"Classic games in the NES Nintendo Switch Online collection and the save data for those games will not be removed unless the user chooses to do so manually. These items are stored locally on the Nintendo Switch system but cannot be accessed without an active Nintendo Switch Online membership."

By comparison, Xbox One cloud backup saves are available to all players, no subscription needed. And while Sony requires a PlayStation Plus subscription for users to take advantage of cloud saves, those saves are preserved for six months and become accessible again if users resubscribe to PlayStation Plus within that six-month window.

Nintendo's cloud save page now also has a footnote explaining that not all games support cloud saves at all. It's a reality that came to light earlier this week when it was discovered Pokemon Let's Go, Splatoon 2, and others won't have cloud save functionality. With the Nintendo Switch Online service just days away from launch, you can read up on all the known details about it.

I think you maybe can. I know the save data still saves to the system, even with a micro SD card installed. But they have ways you can mess with your saves in the settings. I don't really mess with it, but maybe you can copy them to a card or something... That being said, it might not help because of the formatting...

To be fair, a Netflix queue is a significantly smaller amount of data than these cloud saves will be. It's not entirely comparable, aside from being another example of a company not immediately saying "we don't care about you anymore" once the customer stops paying. It is a pretty basic courtesy.

EvilMegas posted...

Presuming you're paying by the year (which makes sense because that's overwhelmingly the best deal), that's a pretty contrived situation. You'd have to break/lose it very close to the renewal time, while also taking several months to get a replacement. In that case, honestly, I think paying for the service despite not having a system is a pretty reasonable expectation, since you are getting them to do something for you (hold onto your saves for a few months).

That said, manual backups really should be a thing.

Nothing about nintendo's online subscription service is remotely defensible. At the end of the day it's mandatory if you want to play the games that require it for online functionality so I can understand why some people would buy it, but let's not pretend it isn't an awful value proposition.

People just seem to be mad because Nintendo use to be free and now decided to do what the other companies did. That's how it feels, at least

I mean, $20 a year to play games online isn't bad. It's a whole lot more expensive than we've come to expect from Nintendo, especially with how long it's taken them to get this service together (it was supposed to be up and running by *last* fall, with early adopters just getting a few free months of Splatoon and ARMS, so Switch owners shouldn't have had time to get used to free online for the system), but it's not a bad price. It's just that the incentives they're offering alongside online play really kinda suck (with the exception of cloud saves, which would be a nice little luxury if not for the lack of manual backups that makes them kind of necessary).

you don't need a live subscription for Microsoft to backup your saves on the cloud, it's free for everyone regardless, it happens automatically, and they don't get deleted unless you specifically delete it.

That is a clickbait title on the article. It is NOT deleted as soon as your subscription lapses. There is a period of time in which it will still exist if you renew your subscription. To me their FAQ reads as they will try and keep the data, but if they run out of storage they'll start deleting old files for people who no longer have a subscription, likely in order of people who have been unsubscribed for the longest.
