The BIGGEST Yakuza game ever!!!! (at least at this point in time I don't know if any other ps4 ones have more content or not). I kept hearing how massive this game was prior to playing it and that certainly is true, but the process of platinuming Yakuza games is the same across all of them so really you're just doing the same things you were doing in 3 and 4, but for longer. This was the first one to actually require 100% on the completion checklist, but thanks to my experience with the prior entries in the series I was able to manage this list and realize when certain tasks needed to be done.

The amount of things to do in this game is crazy though. It's a Yakuza game sure there's already the 32 or so different mini games to play, the hostess clubs to visit with each character plus every characters set of substories as you would expect, but each chapter also saw new side story mode that completely changed the genre of the game. For Kiryu it was Initial D style taxi racing, for Saejima it turned into a Cabela's hunting game, Haruka had all her idol stuff that turned it into a Project Diva game and newcomer Shinada (who I liked much better than Yakuza 4's chinese cop guy) turned it into a batting cage simulator with actual good batting controls (FINALLY). There was also other side content that encouraged exploring each character's city like taking photos, picking up trash, finding the locker keys and finding lottery tickets.

I feel each character's solo chapters were some of my favorite content in the series before it went a bit crazy with out of left field plot twists in the final chapter, but for the most part I'm fine with it. Much like how 4 felt like a proper follow up to the events of Yakuza 1, this felt like it did the same to Yakuza 2 while also tying together everything that had been building up over all 5 games. Everything else in the game pretty much blows the prior 4 games out of the water. While I think it still used the same engine from Yakuza 3 and 4, everything just felt so much more polished from the graphics to the combat (although the framerate did take a hit, especially in those chase sequences, the PS3 can only handle so much)

All this resulted in what i feel is my favorite one of these I played to date. I ended up playing it for about 165 hours total and was never really bored with it and now I can finally move on to the PS4 games for what I'm hoping will be even better entries in the series

oh yeah I think the end of Kiryu's segment (Chapter 1-4) is probably my favorite moment in the series so far taking on the entire Tojo clan that's in Nagasugai and dodging rockets like he's in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

I thought 5 was way too long. I ended up getting a bit bored of it and it took me months to finish as a result.

Looking back I started playing the game on June 27th and I was playing it every day so almost 5 weeks to complete

Compared to games I spent 600+ hours to platinum this wasn't too bad. Yakuza series as a whole might end up taking that long

By the time we got to Yakuza 5 i think i might've just been a bit fed up with the same old same old. The 3rd game was pretty awful and the 4th mixed it up with the new characters to play as. But the 5th only really brought the Haruka gameplay to the table. I almost didn't get 0 straight away because of it. But the lack of games to play at the time and the fact it was set in the 80's was enough for me to day 1 it. That game pretty much saved the series for me. Thankfully they've freshened it up a bit with the new engine for 6 and Kiwami 2.

You are absolutely correct. Kiryu's segment is easily the best part of the series. Unfortunately, the plot kinda shits itself as the game continues

Holy spumoni SHINE, grats on platting all of the PS3 gen games!

Yakuza 5 is honestly pretty staggering when it comes to just how much content it brings to the table. You were right on the money - Kiryu's section is A+++ and one of the best stretches in the series. Sadly the game drops off quite a bit after that but the sheer variety of gameplay keeps it great all the way through.

Haruka and Shinada's sections were both pretty huge breaths of fresh air in their own ways and Akiyama is based as always, so it really only leaves Saejima's section as a stinker and even then he's got an absolutely gorgeous town along with one of the best heat actions in the series, Essence of Snowman.

Next up is IMO the best game in the series and one of my favorite games ever made, I'm super pumped that you're about to experience it!

Yakuza 0 has probably got the best story line in any game ever made tbh.
