Why didn't Odin warn or prepare anyone for the coming of Hela? He knew that she would come instantly when he died. He knew what she was capable of and he had the rest of his existence to prepare his world for her.

But he told no one. And then when he died he's just like "oh yeah, she's coming. Have fun, I'm out!"

He already knew the course of events that would have to take place. There was no real stopping Hela. No amount of preparation that would change anything. Odin knew that Asgard would have to be destroyed. It was all part of the ragnarok prophecy.

You mean about his shady past? Maybe he was embarrassed about who he used to be? It's not like he could keep it a secret, you'd think tons of people would know that a lord of murder and death turned into a lord or peace....it's not like people would forget a thing like that.

It really seems that the majority of Asgardians are relatively weak and short lived compared to the special people. So yeah, a few generations down the line, they easily forgot about her.
