is transsexual offensive or something? i mean even as a kid in the 90s, i knew what transsexual was in concept at early age.

transgender was put forth to obfuscate the synonym of sex and gender....? i dunno, that's my first assumption as of now.

Transsexual is arguably a subset of transgender for gender identity, but they're not interchangeable terms and have distinct connotations Transsexual people desire to change their sex. Some people may be both transsexual and transgender, only if they desire to change their sex through some medical means. Being transgender does not mean that you will or even want to undergo hormone therapy, sex reassignment surgery, etc.

Cross dressing is simply dressing in clothes traditionally worn by members of the other gender.

Drag is a whole performance of exaggerated gender impressions. So, over the top, campy, outrageous. Clearly not real.

Your dad who wears a dress when he's home alone but very much feels like a man, transvestite.

Trixie Mattel or Divine, drag queen.

-Transgender means you identify as something other than your birth gender.
-Transsexual means you have undergone gender reassignment surgery.
-Cross-dressing means you dress in the clothing of the opposite gender.

No one uses transexual anymore. Even transitioning doesn't charge your sex; that's all chromosomes. Operative surgery is done to better help people present as their gender. There's no different word for pre-op vs post-op transgender people.

Jesus preserve me from straight people comment on queer culture. Were you following that culture you would know that voguing and ballroom culture haven't gone anywhere. Ten weeks ago Vanessa Hudgens cringe comment about her being so into voguing was trending across all gay social media. The Vogue dancesteps and hand performances show up again and again in lipsync shows including episodes of RuPaul's drag race. Even Katy Perry is making a few overtures towards the Vogue scene. It's not disappeared, it's gone mainstream.

Actually there are a lot of women who Vogue in the ballroom scene as well. Often the categories don't even care about the sex of the Vogue performer. They care about how they want to present (femme queen/butch queen/etc) and divide categories based on that. Gender literally has nothing to do with it. You can do a routine as femme queen, change wardrobe and choreography, and perform again as a butch queen, no prob.

Stupid? They're purely descriptive. The names are right there on the label. Literally couldn't be any more helpful. The only real mental hump to get over is understanding the judges don't care about what's in between your legs or how you present yourself for the rest of your life. They only care about what you serve on the dancefloor.

It's had an interesting history. It's been a staple of gay entertainment for over a century and really played up it's aspect of being a campy comedic theater gag that carried an extra layer of meaning for other other gay people who could notice the nod. That eventually made it to theater, pop theater has always been a bit subversive and then film, where you had iconic female film stars who lived over-the-top lives of glamour or played strong women who were uncharacteristically assertive for the time. Drag changed to copy and express admiration for those celebrities, their attitudes and their appearances and we get our early gay icons. Then the pageant drag and comedy drag performers like Divine come into the picture.

I don't know why, but in the eighties drag became politically unpopular with in the gay community. If I had to guess (mostly informed from pieces written in the nineties describing the eighties), the AIDS epidemic had a lot of people kind of rejecting aspects of the culture that distinguished them from straight people, mostly pieces of culture that came into their prime in the seventies. Drag was too stereotypical a hobby for a 'respectable' gay man to participate in, and if you were unironically doing or supporting it, you were being a socially irresponsible homosexual and just confirming all the negative associations straight people already had of us. If this is true, then the least that can be said is that the era of grindr did not invent self-hating homosexuals.

I don't know how we just happened to get over ourselves in the early nineties. I personally believe gay Americans realized they were wasting their time trying to appeal to the mainstream. And while AIDS was still seen as a 'gay disease,' anyone with a modicum of knowledge knew risky sex, not homosexuality was the major factor here, and gay people hardly cornered the market on that. So we began rebuilding from the wreckage of the previous decade.

I'm 100% here for it. Drag is how a lot of gay men (and maybe even straight men) try and access parts of themselves that don't often show. If it's at all effective, that therapeutic window should be accessible to everyone. It also draws attention to the ways gender in our societies is a performance. Just because it's a performance doesn't mean it's not an honest representation of oneself. But having that knowledge that we are performing, lets us make conscious decisions about our presentation, gives us a certain sense of control over ourselves, and lets us better empathize with others.
