USA boycotted the 1980 Olympics in protest of the USSR invading Afghanistan because it was in Moscow. In return, the USSR boycotted the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Ha, that was where they gave out a TON of free food because the USA won an insane amount of gold without the USSR involved, correct?

Just imagine the bureaucratic (and political) mess that would ensue if the IOC considered reassigning all Soviet, Jugoslavia etc medals.

You know, I've seen 1980 before for that "Miracle on Ice" but never gave it much thought, which...goes for anything related to the winter "olympics."

But now I looked up about it, and until 1994 winter games, they were held the same year as the Olympics up until 1992. Wow, they're even more of a joke of an "olympics" than I realized! The opening act to the real deal until eventually the IOC realized they couldn't have them so close to the real olympics lest they look foolish.
Also, complete bs that a winter athlete in his/her prime in the '90's got a chance to rack up three "olympics" worth of competitions in just 6 years! When they report that "This is the Xth Winter 'Olympics'!" they should at least be fair and deduct 1/2 from that count....

Another thing...Germany should never be chosen to host Olympics ever again. Literally not a single instance where the IOC could look back to choosing Germany and say, "this was a great idea!"
