Probably because Christian Bale is a great actor and can also do a convincing American accent. Most people suck at accents.

because Batman skips Church this is true I think. technically DC lists Batman as a Christian. but I think that's carryover from the old days when athiests were not popular in media. But I think if any super hero would be an athiest it would be Batman. he's pretty cynical and doesn't trust powerful beings. He's be more likely to make a plan to defeat God than to pray to him ...
