It's a character study about this lonely and confused black teen, right.
The only friend that he's ever had was this Vietnamese girl in elementary but he hasn't seen her in years. So to honor his memory of her and satisfy his inner feelings about himself, he desires to turn into an Asian girl in her image. Drama ensures before, during and after the process regarding hardship, discrimination, loneliness/friendship and finding one's true self.

Then after the surgery a few of his (now her) relatives support him. The rest strongly disapproves, including his father! I want a powerful scene where he's checking out his new look in the nude and his little brother walks in on him! There's a beat...
Then the little brother leaves the room without saying a word. Disappointed in what his older brother, someone he looked up to, has become.

That's when the main character concludes that he's become a burden to his family, so he leaves without warning one day and have to prostitute himself in order to make a living in his rundown apartment.
