My father talks constantly about race and one of the things he said is that he likes to be a patron of businesses owned by different ethnicities and races, not just going to white-owned businesses.

What do you think about this? Do you incorporate this mentality when shopping?

I dont seek it out. I just shop wherever I feel like shopping. With that being said there is a flower shop that is a black owned business that I always shop at for my flower buying needs...which is like twice a year. I dont go there because theyre black. I go there because I like the service I get.

I'm fine with someone wanting to do that. I don't shop at many small shops, so I don't really incorporate it, nor do I check

The only black-owned businesses I'm aware of are the ones near my work, in the ghetto. I try to avoid them because of the high crime rate in the area. Since I've worked here, we've had our neighboring business get held up at gun point, one of our employees got knocked out in the middle of the day just outside the office doors, just last week there was a shooting on our street, nearby gas station had 2 deaths in 1 month, several license plate stickers stolen, a few times where a local slammed into work trucks and then took off... the list goes on. This is Milwaukee's north side. 99% black population. Tbh it's very hard not to be racist after being around people like this for several years.

I have no way to tell if the shops near me are black owned. But if they were -- and the products were at least comparable in quality to other stores -- I'd make an extra effort to shop there.

I don't avoid them but most black owned businesses are small and like most small establishments, crappy and not worth going to. Especially here in Cincinnati. I'm not familiar with any brands that are black owned, sans the black section of the hair care isle, none of which I need.

I'm guessing my dad is indeed thinking of mom and pop stores where black people are working, though that doesn't necessarily mean that the business is black-owned.

There's so many of those in the area. He basically feels that not enough people make a conscious effort to shop at black businesses so that the black community can "get a piece of the action" as well.

I shop no matter where. Having that mentality is kinda racist because youre forcing yourself to go to different businesses just cause of the owners/owners skin color. Skin color doesnt relegate where I do my business.

My father's also stating that it is racist to primarily go to white-owned businesses and not try to be a consumer at minority businesses.
