I thought the thing was consoles are a couple of hundred, while games are a decent chunk of money each, whereas building a decent gaming PC can put you back a couple of thousand while the games are dirt cheap?

It comes down to what you get out of it, but generally you'll get the current gen XBOX/PS games, as well as any past gen you missed which will be cheap, and you'll be able to keep the machine at least as long as current gen gaming lasts if it's good, sometimes longer if you are playing AAAs at ultra settings. Plus you have access to a bunch of free games and have a computer that can do a lot more than a console can, such as mod games. It's a better deal, but it's not necessarily cheaper.

Instead of paying $80 for games and then for online subscriptions on top of that, PC gamers put that extra money towards hardware. This lets them game at 4K and 60/120 FPS, instead of 1080p and 20-30FPS (with lower-res textures) like their console counterparts endure.

You pay more upfront, but at the same time you can do more with a PC. Games are also cheaper so if you buy a lot of them, the savings will eventually make up for the higher initial cost.
