But the number of firearms actually sold on Friday was probably higher than 203,086 because a buyer would require just one check but could purchase multiple firearms in a single transaction. It is a popular time of year to buy guns. The previous record of 185,713 background checks was set one year earlier on Black Friday. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is designed to keep guns from falling "into the wrong hands," according to the FBI, although the reality sometimes falls short of the goal. Federal law bars convicted felons or anyone under a domestic violence protective order from owning a firearm, among other people. The FBI says out of the more than 230 million checks that have been conducted, more than a million denials have been issued. The agency also says the system "ensures the timely transfer of firearms to eligible gun buyers." In the vast majority of cases, the background check takes just a couple of minutes, and if it comes out clean, the buyer walks away with the weapon, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing FBI data. But even if there is a holdup, the consumer may still be able to get the gun promptly. "In about 8% of cases, the verdict is delayed, and the seller has to wait three days. If there is no verdict after three days, the sale can go through," reports the newspaper. Another loophole: only federally-licensed firearm dealers require background checks. Consumers can get around the rule by making a legal purchase from unlicensed sellers. It's funny how this statistic is a) Completely wrong and b) Not controlling for things like population density, income, etc., that have a pretty significant effect on crime. I mean, if you want to play the statistics game, the US has more guns than any other country on the planet, both in raw numbers and per capita. So by this logic it should also be one of the safest, if not the safest country on the planet. What we find is exactly the opposite - it is the least safe first-world country by a fucking mile. It has a murder rate three-to-fucking-twenty times higher than its contemporaries. Meanwhile countries like Japan, Norway, and the Netherlands - all of which heavily restrict or outright ban civilian gun ownership - have some of the lowest murder rates in the world. --- Kill 1 man: You are a murderer.
