Yes, actually.

It's based on the War of the Roses fought between House York and House Lancaster. The north is a stand-in for Scotland and King's Landing is basically London.

It's not 1500's. They are more like 1000's. 1500's is after the medieval period ended. They had guns in the 1500's. There are no guns in game of thrones

Yes, my bad, you are right.

Technically it would be somewhere around the 15th century. They have some pretty advanced metalwork and architecture, and there is some implied early gunpowder/explosives.
