I used to go to the library and pick up a few novels to read every few weeks several years ago. I feel like smartphones and social media have dampened my attention span the last 5 years and it would be harder to get through a book, but I would like to start back.

I regrettably haven't read a book in about a year now and waste my time looking at CE and Facebook clickbait

I shouldn't speak for everyone, but I do feel like in general people these days seem to engage more often in activities that aren't that intellectually challenging.

I was taking buses and ubers to go hiking all summer and I was reading a book I've read several times already there and back each day. Like 30 minutes each day. Finished it in September.

Agreed, but I'd say people are actually reading more now than they did before. Albeit trash on the internet vs books, but their word count is surely higher.

Yes, technically.

You can read trash books too, so it's not to say that books are necessarily better, but I feel like critical thinking is what is being lost. I think there's just an overwhelming amount of news and information and social media content and our eyes are glued, unable to look away and truly process things.

I feel the same way. Add to that how rapidly information comes and goes, and the fact that we don't need to retain info like we used to because we can always search for anything we need in seconds on a phone, and people have become far less social when seeking knowledge now as well...ok, I've gone a little off course here. I agree with you. Critical thinking is disappearing at an alarming rate.

Touching on what you said, memory isn't as important these days either since you can look things up in an instant, anywhere, anytime.

Probably 6 months ago when I got a book on aquaponic gardening. I read it in it's entirety. This is if you don't count books I read to my niece and nephews that take all of 3 to 5 minutes to finish.
