I actually owe them money. The lady never liked us so I figured but

500 deposit

450 on a new carpet

20 dollars because I didn't return a laundry card

20 dollars because of new oven burners

And they put my utilies on there

So I actually owe 80 dollars

If I had already started the police academy I wouldn't care but another a month with no pay. Ugh

Why did they need to buy a new carpet and oven burners?

I have no clue about the oven burners. They worked fine when I last checked. And it said dog urine all over which is a little nuts. we have a really expensive rug washer that we use to keep the carpet clean. We only had the dog for a month before we moved anyways

You should dispute the price of the oven burner in that case or find out why they needed replacing. Also if the carpet weren't brand new you could probably make the landlord cover part of the cost. If you destroyed 3 year old carpets, the landlord can only bill you the price of 3 year old carpets.

Replacing over burners like that would count as normal wear and tear, which wouldn't be something the landlord could claim payment from the tenant for. At least that's how it would be here in NZ

We were only there for a year

And the place was a piece of crap. It looked real nice the first visit. After a week it was clear it was all for show. Every. Single. Door fell off the track. It was badly insulated, and walls paper thin

Protip for the future: before you drop your notice put in maintenance requests for broken shit. And then after it's cleaned out take pictures of everything.
