Absolutely. If you're interested in self defense, learn something like boxing.

Martial Arts, like Karate or whatever, are nothing more than physical theatrics. They exist because their flashiness looks nice.

Karate specifically or any martial art?

You know what, either way, no of course not. Your body is your first line of defense and your most important weapon, and knowing how to fight is always a good idea.

Martial arts improves stamina, strength, and technique so yes it is a great thing to learn. However, you need to be able to apply it in realistic fighting to be viable for self defense. A traditional art like karate is horrible for self defense as a whole. But, learning it in conjunction with say Jiu Jitsu or Judo would improve your odds in a self defense setting. Some martial arts are designed for defense and you can get by with just learning to apply it, like Krav Maga and Muay Thai.

Bottom line: don't limit yourself to a traditional art and always practice realistic scenarios.

Not really. Many styles have thousands of years as to why they ended up the way they did. Most martial arts have roots in old Chinese peasants defending their town from bandits because they weren't allowed weapons. A lot of unusual "asian" weaponry looks the way it does because it was disguised as farm equipment. Sais made 3 holes to plant rice, tonfa were handles for turning Mills, nunchacku were used to assist with leverage carrying grain sacks, etc.

They turned it into a science over the years.
