However, you need to be able to apply it in realistic fighting to be viable for self defense. A traditional art like karate is horrible for self defense as a whole. But, learning it in conjunction with say Jiu Jitsu or Judo would improve your odds in a self defense setting. Some martial arts are designed for defense and you can get by with just learning to apply it, like Krav Maga and Muay Thai. Many styles have thousands of years as to why they ended up the way they did. Most martial arts have roots in old Chinese peasants defending their town from bandits because they weren't allowed weapons. A lot of unusual "asian" weaponry looks the way it does because it was disguised as farm equipment.
