The president told me to do a project that would have taken months and was pointless if she understood the nature of that aspect of the business, so I never did it. She never brought it up again, fortunately.

There have been a few times when I've refused to do things at work, usually there is a pretty good reason, and every time I've done it, when it was taken up to higher management, they took my side.

The last time I it happened went something like this.

"Hey, I need you to do something for me."
"No."
"...No?"
"Take it up with the VP."

*5 minutes later, VP sends a department-wide e-mail* "Do not interrupt him for any reason."

How did you reach that level where they primarily take your side?

Yea

My last job I had to create these things for clients and bascially the middle-man would come to me telling me what they wanted

Middle-Man: "The client wants this, this, and this"
Me: "Ok, I can do it like this so its uniform with everything else"
MM: "Well they want this other stuff added"
Me: "I don't know what to tell you here. I'm not doing that"

I'm actually fairly low level. It's just increasingly common in software development when you have deadlines. The biggest productivity killer is interruptions for stupid shit. I've heard stories of other company presidents sending out office-wide e-mails saying "You are not allowed to even talk to this person for the next 2 months."
