Nintendo is ramping up its production order of Switch consoles ahead of the increased demand expected during the 2017 holiday shopping season, reports the Financial Times.

The console sold extremely well following its launch in March, and it’s been difficult to find them in stores before they sell out. The Japanese gaming company already reportedly boosted its production order in March: The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was aiming to produce at least 16 million consoles this fiscal year. The company now appears to be aiming to manufacture at least 18 million units between now and March 2018, citing fears of “customer tantrums” during the holiday season.

The Financial Times notes that Nintendo has “denied that it had plans to boost production to that level, sticking to its official hardware shipment target of 10” million units, but analysts believe that the company is on track to produce upwards of twice that.

Increasing the number of consoles out there would certainly help with demand, and Nintendo has seen a string of shortages with the Switch and its now-discontinued NES Classic. But the increase could mean problems on the production side, and the Financial Times notes that the company could face supply shortages, such as with the LCD screens that the devices use. Hopefully, a production boost will mean that some consumers might reasonably expect to get their hands on one of the devices sometime this year.

Yeah, because they know that the Holiday season is going to be hell for them if they have a bunch of big games out by then (Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, ARMS, whatever is revealed at E3), but no one can actually get a Switch console.

Is Nintendo trolling us? I mean, first the whole NES classic fiasco where they claimed they couldn't afford to produce anymore instead of admitting they didn't want the NES classic to cut into their eShop sales, and now blaming the customer for their poor ass manufacturing?

I mean, this is, what, the third console in a row that has been under manufactured and they want us to believe it took the customers being dicks for them to realize that?

Well, I don't even know how many truly patient and mature gamers there are in the world, but I think the number would come to about... less than 1%

I saw a grown ass man having to be escorted out of Nintendo NY by security after he threw a fit about missing the NES Classics that were in stock that day. Me and my friend had just bought ours a few minutes ago and were keeping quiet, hehe.

I'm glad it's doing so well. With Zelda, Mario Kart, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey it looks like it'll have a solid lineup for the holiday season.

From what I've heard it's nowhere near as difficult to get a Switch as it was to get a Wii or NES classic. Basically put in some decent effort (i.e look around for stock over the course of 2 or 3 weeks) and you'll eventually get one. I know launch in my area anyone who wanted one had no issue for the first 3-4 days.

The rumor is 18 million total will now be manufactured for the financial year ending in March 2018. Which is a huge increase in production compared to their original forecast if true. That's not far off the PS4's first year.
