Has your shopping experience ever been like this?

-Go get bag of grapes
-get grapes while shopping
-want something salty or get a bag of chips, start eating it
-thirsty so get a bottle of water/soda/juice and start drinking
-pay for all it at cashier

yep. More times then not I get a drink and just drink it as I shop. I still pay for it obvi

This is a retelling of something that happened to my supervisor. Some guy did something like that, but with the intention of not paying. And it wasn't just a ringable item, It was a banana, which is sold by weight. He ate it, and left the peel on some shelf. My boss saw the whole thing.

When the guy was paying, my boss picked the biggest banana he could find, and added it to his things, telling the cashier to ring it up too, since the guy ate one. The guy protests:
- "B-but, it wasn't THAT big!"
- "Oh, I don't know that. You ate it, so we can't verify that..."
Guy had to pay.

Doubtful, then he'd still get a free banana..

And yes, I'll occasionally open a drink for shopping if I am really thirsty (happened when shopping high sometimes). It's no bid deal to ring it up with all your stuff. I'd never eat in the store, cause that's gross. Shopping carts are nastay

Easy workaround. Have people weigh in when they come in and again at the register. Just need some way to confirm what produce was eaten.

I haven't, but I don't have a problem with a customer doing it if they pay for it and it isn't something sold by weight when they check out with the rest of their items.

I don't feel comfortable eating something I have yet to pay for, on the off chance that they assume it is stealing.

I actually was at a store once, but not a grocery store, and I wanted to open something so I waited a bit and then asked somebody if I could eat what I had because logically I wanted to eat, pay, and leave quickly. They said it was fine and that normally that was how people did it there. I cannot remember where the fuck that happened though.

I used to do this at my little local country gas station. The cashier would end up ringing up an empty bottle. I wouldn't do it outside of that place where everyone knows me.

I do drinks sometimes but I'm cool with the Meijer here. I also just wander around in the back rooms. If you look like you belong no one questions you.

Only if I'm super thirsty or if it's like, grapes that aren't sold by the lb (like in those bags that already have the price listed). I rarely do it though. Don't see it as trashy, I'm still paying for it.

Though I admit, as a child I used to grab a couple candies from the bag-your-own section when those were a thing.
