If you go to the south of the united states near the mexico border you get all kinds of spanish sounding names for the towns like El Paso and things like that, and everyone speaks spanish.

But if you go to the north of mexico near the US border the names of the places aren't in english and no one speaks english

It's not fair

A lot of parts of the US used to be Spanish/Mexican territory.

Texas used to be Mexico. There are lots of native Spanish speakers down there, and their ancestors would have named the cities. Plus immigrants from mexico are obviously going to concentrate in the southern states because it's most convenient.

The last time I was in Miami I wanted to buy soap, so I went to the pharmacy and asked around. I just couldn't get anyone to tell me where the soap was because pretty much everyone on staff only spoke spanish

Then I went to the publix grocery and the cashier read the price of the stuff in spanish instead of english

Imagine living in the US and not having at least a fundamental grasp of Spanish.

yeah, down here if you don't know spanish you might as well not even bother
but then again, spanish is easy as fuck to learn the basics so it's not really an issue

And also when I was in Miami I was in an elevator.

I wanted to go to the eighth floor.

So an elderly man walked in the elevator and I held the door for him. So I asked what floor he wanted because I was closest to the buttons, but he didn't say anything. So I pushed the 8 button for myself and the old man said "ocho ocho"

I literally thought he meant "ochu", the monster in Final Fantasy:

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ochu

And I thought why he was talking about Final Fantasy.

Later I told the story to my friend, who said that "ocho" means eight in spanish.

I mean, it does kind of sound like the otto in italian, but not really. I seriously thought he meant the monster from Final Fantasy.

Yeah, and why are there so many French place names in the Midwest? This isn't France!

That's pretty unreasonable to expect of anyone not living near the border or in a big city.

I live neither near the border or in a big city. But the US education system is total trash wrt languages so i guess its not entirely their fault
