One of the guys in the Beginner's School tells you that you should only steal from humanoid enemies. It made things easier for me since I had far fewer enemy steals to balance, and it's easier on the player since you now have a clear visual RE: which enemies to steal from instead of just trying to steal from everything.

I suppose you could just put the "doesn't have anything" on every non human enemy.
Although I imagine there are a few enemies that one could argue over whether they're really "humanoids" or not, like the magitek roaders.

Cool. When you can stand to steal from those weaker monsters, I recommend holding on to those until way later in the game. I won't spoil the how or why though.

There's a few rages you can potentially miss if you don't unlock the formations, but the areas you can't go back to have their encounters hidden on the world map.

There are roughly 300 monsters in the game, about 64 of which are humanoid. I opted to only give the humans things to steal so it would be far less balance work. Plus with a skill like steal, players get really burnt out stealing from *every* new enemy they run across - having a clear indication of "this enemy has something to steal" such as "two legs" means that they're much more likely to try. But that means I have to get that message across, and I choose negative reinforcement over positive reinforcement because it just sticks in the player's mind more. The only two cases of negative reinforcement that will flat-out kill you are both located right at or right next to save points, so virtually no time is lost, and a lesson is (hopefully) learned.

Only at the very beginning of the game. You don't just die instantly, they just use high level attacks that do a lot of damage.

I think I'm with you up to there.

I suppose it's a side-effect of not being able to change things except at a certain points, so it's not like you can filter the enemy selection or something.

I think I would have just put a really obvious message somewhere "don't waste your time stealing from monsters", and then make it miss 100% of the time on them. even without the message, it would start to be pretty obvious after a while.

This is being addressed in the next update. We really want for it to fucntion mroe as a trading post than an RNG-fest, so the only two opponents of any real difficulty (Siegfried and WEAPON) are getting beaten with a nerf stick.
