Basically, I wanted to get a Mechanical Engineering degree as I was working towards it previously and figured I'd finish up in the same field.

The school I transferred to took 82 credits (out of a possible 95), however only 47 would transfer towards an ME degree. On the flip side, all about 6 of the credits would go towards Applied Mathematics (and it appears to be the Major that would take the most credits).

So I don't know a lot about the viability of it as a degree. I assume it's not as good as an ME degree (which is very frustrating) but I'd hate to have to do over 80 credits when I'm listed as a junior right now.

So any advice would be helpful. I'm contacting the school to see if there's anything that could be equivalent (for example, there's two classes that are Introductory to Physics 1 and Introductory to Physics 2, and I have Physics 1 and Physics 2 equivalents, so maybe they can just apply those to those introductory classes), and I'd hate to not be able to get the major I wanted, but I also don't want to go to college for another 3+ years.

For some reason I first thought this topic was about temperatures, then I thought it could be about angles, so I entered the topic to figure out what kind of degrees you really meant

I don't know about either degree but good luck. It's nice that you're going for it and not letting college stay one of your regrets.

I don't know about Applied Mathematics.
I have been told that Engineering degrees, period, are really hot right now. (Oh, the puns.)

Well it might stay one of my regrets if AM isn't worth anything, cause I'm not going to go back to ME if I'm that far behind on credits.

Applied math isn't useless, but it probably wouldn't be as useful as a Mech E degree if that's the thing you want to do (I imagine it could be more useful in a finance-like area, especially if it was focused in statistics-like classes instead of a bunch of calc stuff). I wouldn't give up on it though; it's possible that you could get hired with the AM degree if you can convince them that you know the material taught in the relevant classes, though that may require taking a few more Mech E classes anyway.

So... 47 credits transfer to ME (worst case -- I bet you could get the Physics to transfer, or in the worst case you proficiency out of it), while 76 transfer to Applied Math. That's a difference of 29 credits, which is one year of school. If you can knock out the two Physics classes that's probably around 20-22 credits (Physics courses tend to be more than 3 credits each), which you could do in a semester and a summer. I think it's probably best to spend the extra year (at most) getting the degree you want.

MechE is going to do more for you than Applied Math. The courses you would be taking to finish off your Math degree are probably not going to be very practical. I'm just guessing, but I'd imagine you'd be taking a few proof courses as well as things like Diff Eq and Linear Algebra. Might not be what you're looking for.

From what I've seen, Applied Math is mainly useful if it's paired with something else -- some sort of application. My research advisor had her PhD in Applied Math which she used with her undergrad in Chemistry to go into Computational Chemistry research. Other people I've seen have double majors with Applied Math. You certainly could find job offers with the Math degree, but an Engineering degree is probably going to do more for you since it's kinda a "thing" right now.

F***, I read it wrong.

47 credits DON'T go towards an ME degree. Meaning only 35 credits go towards it.

How can all these credits go towards an ME degree at one school and not even half at another? F*** me.

Because most schools won't let you graduate without taking the core courses at their school... makes sure that if they put their name on you they know you're up to the standards of that school.

But if even the basic physics courses aren't transferring that's a bit weird. Where'd you get the credit numbers from? Directly from an advisor? If not, they might be able to help you out if you talk to one. If so, did they mention anything about proficiency exams?

No, what bothers me is that the courses transferred, they just don't go towards anything. I have all these math classes that one school said "yes, you need these" and this school said "you don't need any of them except one."

They're not rejecting any of my classes, they're just saying "oh, we don't need these" for most of them.

I'm a little confused. Would the engineering school still accept those credits and they just count towards general ed?

At this point, I might have to. But it's f***ing awful because I put so much time and effort in getting ready to move out there and visiting the campus and doing everything necessary. And if I start over, I'm probably not going to be able to get anywhere until next Fall. And my dad sold our house, so we have to find someplace to live and soon.

I honestly don't know how to break it to my dad.

The problem is money at that point. 80+ credits at $348 a credit hour is nearly $30,000.

I really don't want to pay that much money, especially since I already have student loans to pay from all the credits I already took (95 credits).

Well, I talked to an adviser and he's saying I'm looking at 61 credits to finish my degree. Now THAT I can live with (looking at 2-2.5 semesters).

For ME? That's great news! Though 61 credits in 3 semesters seems a bit rough (20 credits each semester, and these are going to be the hardest courses in the major).

Either way, glad this worked out for the most part. =]

Whoops, meant 2-2.5 years, or 4-4.5 semesters.
