Do your homework. Become familiar with Kelly Blue Book and Carfax. Read reviews of the models you're interested in from places like Consumer Reports.

Yep, Toyota and when you test drive it be sure to hit all gears including reverse. Also if it's used get a feel of how the transmission expects you to drive so you can tell if the previous owner was heavy footed.

Try to get financing from a credit union, if you can't do cash. Try to avoid financing from the dealer.

thats terrible advice unless hes buying a 200 dollar junker. If hes just buying his first car he needs to build his credit up

The dealer makes more on financing than the sale. Why else would dealerships get into financing in the first place? If she must finance the car, a credit union provides far more favorable terms than the dealer. The financing still has to be paid off so the opportunity to build credit is still there.

I'm not trying to get anything fancy or anything. Just something that's nice and serviceable for the time being.

Funny that someone mentioned a Civic because my dream car is actually a 1990 Honda Civic CRX. That's how low standard I am when it comes to cars lol

If you're looking at the CRX you might want to look at the VW GTI for comparison purposes. You might even like it better - it's very fun to drive.

I dug through listings on cars.com(though there are a lot of places to do this now) before contacting sellers who had vehicles that looked interesting. Always compare the price to the price KBB has(they appraise cars at lower prices than the other one), always check the Carfax. If the Carfax isn't provided for free on the listing, you should be worried. It will tell you. Research the make and model: how reliable is it, how costly would it be to insure, how costly is it to repair if something happens, how good is the gas mileage, etc.

When you actually go to check out the car, make sure you get documentation on the price(even if it's just your own note). If you know something about cars, ask them to let you look it over. If you don't know anything about cars, try to bring some one who does with you(or see if you can have the car brought to some one you trust to be looked over). Plenty of dealers are decent, but there are plenty who aren't and it pays to verify everything yourself. They will try and bleed you for money, and some will even try to raise the price after the fact(especially if you're a woman, they'll feel they can browbeat you into a higher price). Remember that you can always get up and leave, and make sure they know that.

I've owned a Chrysler Lebaron, Ford Crown Victoria, and a Honda Civic.

By far the best car is the Civic which I've had almost 7 years now. The Ford was the worst. The Lebaron was my first car and was mostly OK considering it was a 94 when I got it in 2002 and a storm popped the back window in so I had to replace the car.

Civcs are great since there's always a new model every year so compatible parts are always readily in supply.

They hold their value. And they're so popular and abundant that parts and labor are going to be cheaper.

All car brands have higher quality these days, but Toyota and Honda are still the best car makers. And it's not really a Japanese thing as they are significantly more reliable compared to Nissan and Mitsubishi.

They do? I see them go for cheap and start for sale for cheap. Trucks, sports cars, and jeep tend to hold longer

Get a Subaru or Nissan. My first car was an 07 Nissan Altima, bought it 10 years ago, and I was sad to sell it off last year. I miss that car. Only thing that ended up going out on it in its 13 years of life was the AC.

STATION WAGONS NEED TO MAKE A COMEBACK

go used japanese: toyota, honda, mazda. (i drive subaru lol)

if getting automatic, avoid CVT, get a conventional automatic

go for a hatch/liftback style car for dat cargo space. there were plenty of times I wished i had it

What I would be looking into:
small hatch: civic, fit, corolla, mazda 3,
suv: rav 4, crv/hrv, forester (turbo version), 4runner (eww choice btw besides 4runner/landcruiser and early forester)
pickup: hilux
station wagon: 90s camry, legacy (turbo version), mazda 6

i really like honda fits, though i would get the base model with the manual because I think all their autos are CVT.

If I were personally car hunting, i would be looking at:
honda fit (2007- current) get 1.5L engine
toyota camry wagon (90s/early 00s or even more modern but not sure if they did wagons in recent times)
mazdaspeed6
subaru forester turbo (2000-2007)
subaru legacy turbo (2000-2009)
subaru wrx hatch (2000-2007)

If that is the case look into say a 2003+ Saab. You can get a ton of car for the money.
The prices are amazingly low for the amount of car you get.

They are safe, surprisingly fast, look smart, and drive like a dream.
