I was at the mall with someone and this dude I haven't seen since Freshman year of high school came out of nowhere asking for my name. I recognized him but for some reason, I acted like I didn't know who he was and pretended to be skeptical about how he knew my name. He asked me if I remembered him and I said, "No, sorry."
He asked me if I went to our old school and I said, "Yeah.'
Then he was running down some of the people that we use to hang out with but I just told that I was sorry and didn't know him.
He looked very disappointed when he finally gave up and went on his way.

I'm not sure why I even did that and I fell pretty bad looking back on it.

This is an acceptable practice if it's someone you don't want to associate with further anyway. Family members, for example.
