The king offers to switch places with Damocles for a day, so he can see how it feels like. Which he accepts. Damocles gets to sit in the throne and be pampered, but the king (Who made a lot of enemies) had it arranged so a sword held up by a single horse hair hanged above Damocles. This was meant to represent the ever present dangers a leader must face.
