I watch English dubs with subtitles whenever available for anything. Sometimes you might miss a word or two. Sometimes you have the audio low because sound effects are really loud but then voices are soft. But anyway, the past 4 or 5 days, I've noticed subtitles/CC not working. I finally decided to Google the issue last night, and just about every result I found says its a problem with Crunchyroll and that it never worked as Crunchyroll doesn't allow same language sub/CC.

This can't be the case because I for sure had subtitles/CC on. I know some shows say none exist (like Trigun Stampede), but there are other shows that for sure had the subtitles working such as Assassination Classroom and Solo Leveling. The app still tells me that the subtitles for these are available, but they do not appear on my TV anymore.

This is a Google TV by the way. I wonder if there was an app update or something. I also noticed there's a difference between the Roku app and the Google app. Roku app appears outdated and lacks the "skip intro" and "skip credits" buttons. It also still splits languages as different seasons whereas Google's app does not.

tl;dr: English dub with subtitles used to work, but now they no longer work. Anyone else have this issue?

I had read that before as well, which is definitely odd. I don't have Crunchyroll anymore and the few shows I did watch watch dubbed I never used subtitles but it really makes no sense to do it that way and I doubt it actually is something they do. It's most likely an issue with the app as there are no standards and they are all up to the individual app designers, not the service provider itself (as I've experienced with other apps that never get fixed correctly or broken with new "updates"). Did the app update in the past few days?

I never got subtitles with English dubs. I watched it on my browser, no idea if the apps worked differently

I'm not sure. I did check for updates a couple days ago before I realized there was a problem. But that was because I was comparing the version of the Roku App (5.x) and the Google app (3.x). There wasn't an update available when I checked, but not sure if it updated right before I checked. I meant to see if the problem persists on the website last night, but completely forgot. I'll check it out again when I get home from work or check the phone app during my lunch break.

Ive been rewatching yu yu hakusho on crunchy roll and the subtitles do appear on the dub.
its on the crunchyroll ps4 app, the only issue is that the subtitles need to be re-enabled every few episodes.

I just checked the phone app, and no subtitles are showing. At least not on Tower of God despite them saying subtitles are available. When I first started watching a few weeks ago, subtitles initially weren't showing despite me turning them on. After a while of playing with settings, I realized I had to turn on Closed Captioning on my actual TV. Once I did that, they showed up fine. I did check and make sure they were still on, but no dice.
