It's named incorrectly, though, for the simple reason that it doesn't always make the car accelerate. If they wanted to name it by its use case instead of its function, they should call it a power pedal.

Wouldn't have been accurate anyway. The reason "accelerator" isn't accurate is because, for example, if you have hit top speed, it will not accelerate any further even though you're pushing the pedal. Or if you partially release the pedal, the car will decelerate even though you're pushing the pedal.

What it does do, assuming normal operation, is apply power, that is, exert a certain energy per time, which is partially consumed by friction.

Nope. It will still apply acceleration in order to resist the various other forces that are trying to slow you down. Relatively this would result in a derivative of zero, but that's only because forces external to the vehicle are applying acceleration in the opposite direction.

Nah, this is a common misunderstanding. Force is not equal to mass times acceleration; Net force is equal to mass times acceleration. That is to say, two opposing forces don't have their own acceleration components that cancel out; the forces cancel out and the difference is proportional to acceleration.

Acceleration is the change in velocity. If the vehicle isn't changing its velocity, it's not accelerating, despite what forces may be pushing it.

This does mean that an object that is colloquially decelerating is technically accelerating, so you could argue the only exception is when you've reached the equilibrium speed for the amount of power you're applying, current mass, air friction, etc.

Net force is the "net" of all forces acting on an object. Just because some forces cancel each other out doesn't mean those forces don't exist. It's called the accelerator not the "net accelerator" after all.

There's also the reason that the pedal, when maintained at the same level, does not provide a constant force. The force varies directly with the provided power but inversely with the current velocity. However, the power it provides is at least theoretically constant. I imagine that's not true in practice though.

You're getting your concepts mixed up. Without the force provided by the engine, the unchallenged forces of friction would cause the car to decelerate.

Yep. I thought the initial promo was fascinating, even with the "mishap" with the window. I've been following the details of the Cybertruck release somewhat closely. I own a Model S, but I'd never get a Cybertruck even if I was the type of person who was interested in trucks.

Back in 2014 when Elon Musk was known predominantly for things like Climate activism and not being a full on shit head, he released all of Tesla's patents to the public. So they might "own" the charging network because they're the ones who built it, but they made it so anyone can build the exact same thing. Over time I expect charging stations will be far more varied in who owns them.

Ever since Toyota had this same issue like 10 years ago where the gas pedal had a design flaw that it would slip and get trapped under floor mats Ive looked at mats with final destination fear fuel.

It caused a ton of accidents and forced a physical recall for millions of cars.

Guess Ill add these goofy pedal plates to the list.

Now imagine how much more the other companies suck to have had a head start, the mega media backing of big oil, legacy brands, and their useful stooges signal boosting every time a Tesla so much as has a panel gap thats a mm off while media blacking out your own brands recalls.

Your main competitors CEO making your job even easier by being the biggest public embarrassment of our lifetimes.

And you still couldnt do anything but meekly throw in the towel and accept their charging standard because the alternative was that big of a failure.

Just nationalize the whole industry already.
