The number 1 issue for Americans, by far, seems to be Abortion. It seems that the vast majority of Americans are consistently on the side of Abortion rights. Democrats are clearly taking advantage of that fact because they seem to be out performing Republicans in elections rather consistently.

What I find strange is that, even with this being the case, Republicans keep hard pushing for Abortion bans. They arent trying to adjust around this losing issue. In fact, they seem to bring it to the forefront more often than not for some strange reason.

Has something like this happened before in history? An issue that clearly the vast majority of Americans are on one side of but a political party hard commits to the other side? What has happened if this was a thing in the past?

My assumption is that political party eventually changed sides on that issue but I dont see that change coming any time soon for Republicans. So much so that Im starting to wonder if we are seeing the beginning of the destruction of the Republican Party over this issue. That idea seems absurd though so that is why Im asking if something like this has happened before and what the outcome was.

Im not sure Id agree that abortion is the number one issue for Americans. There are many issues we are concerned with.

The abortion issue was largely shaped during the mid-1900s by Evangelical Christian lobbying.

I agree there are many issues we are concerned with but Abortion tends to affect Americans directly so it is probably the number 1 issue. Its human nature to prioritize their own self interests over interests of others. It sounds horrible to say but its the reality. Im assuming you are thinking that the Palestine situation is number 1.

During and after the Civil War Americans were eager and enthusiastic to pay taxes. Democrats were against it.

Ive read a few times the reason theyre pushing so hard on stuff like this like abortion bans, voting rights, filling courts with Republican follower judges and less taxes for corporations and even gun stuff. Is because the Republican Party doesnt have much of any future. Every year they grow smaller and smaller. Its mostly older white people. They are dying out and the vast majority of younger people and minorities are democrats.

so in a decade or 2 or more they almost have zero chance of getting anything they want done because they just will never have power or votes again. So theyre doing everything they can now to force their way and change all laws to last longer
