It boggles my mind Germany tried to get them too, but Germany was not exactly known for smart decisions at the time.

Did Mexico even have an army capable of threatening the US at the time? Would this be as clear a win for the US as I'm thinking? Would it have led to a different outcome in WW1 as the US would no longer be sending troops?

Mexico was in the midst of the Mexican Revolution for the entirety of WW1, they never would've managed it.

I don't think Germany thought Mexico could gain any territory. They just wanted to keep the US distracted.

Isn't that basically what caused the Brits to lose the War of Independence? They were being attacked by France at home so they couldn't fight on two fronts.
