Eugenics never went away, it just switched from active (sterilization, forced breeding) to passive (picking doctors or scientists as sperm donors).

Back? Iceland has been bragging for years that they've effectively eliminated down syndrome in the country by encouraging pregnant women to get tested and then aborting the child if they're likely to have it. It's apparently been so effective that Denmark does it now too and has already cut the rate of down syndrome babies in half.

If women have the right to choose, what's wrong with choosing to abort a fetus who will otherwise have a developmental, physical, etc. condition that impacts quality of life for them and the parents?

Yeah eugenics has been a buzzword that panics people after WW2, but in the same way that GMOs have a negative connotation, both can be used for good or evil they're just tools to be used properly by humans.

Aborting a fetus with a defect isn't eugenics by the way. Eugenics is literally the sterilization of people who have poor genetic qualities they're likely to pass on. If you abort a fetus you can always try again later. Under eugenics you wouldn't be allowed to.

Honestly, eugenics is only a major problem when it's forced. Everything else is a natural conclusion of reproductive freedom.

Normally I don't think you're wrong about much, but it's one hell of an opinion to say "selectively aborting fetuses isn't eugenics" when it's still a hotly contested subject by people who are bioengineers & much more educated than us about the subject matter. It's up in the air & could be argued either way, the same way there was a distinction made by GMOs that were done through cross breeding flora species, & organisms that went through CRISPR or gene editing.

Fair point though by the same token it's also an overstep to say selective abortion is definitively eugenics.

It's one of those topics that I think is fair to be argued for in either direction. It comes down to a person's morals & ethics. I would say that selectively aborting fetuses that you know will have debilitations or abnormalities is trying to control for more healthy progeny through eugenics, others might say no unless cells are being specifically altered through gene editing.

& Zmythos, I don't know if I'd say it's a "moral" quandary for GMOs as an aside. From what I know & see, the word has been heavily bastardized by misinformation & uninformed people knowing it as a boogeyman just like MSG. When ultimately, given climate change, pesticides, & as populations increase & resources become more scarce, technologies like GMOs will become incredibly important as a logical imperative, instead of being a moral dilemma.

Unfortunately people do make a distinction here because one feels "more natural"

The way I see it, forcing the woman to have an abortion would be eugenics.

There's different types of eugenics. Most people think of like forced sterilization of "undesirables" which is pretty fucked up. Something like this though is a pretty good thing.

And yes, a woman choosing to abort because of genetic reasons, or having a bunch of embryos made and selecting the best is eugenics. But because eugenics has been tainted, people in support of this sort of thing try to claim it doesn't actually count.
