I hear people be like "monkeys and whales are so smart, get them outta zoos!" but then be like "the new aquarium is so cool and fishes are morons so who cares if they're in a tank"

So long as the animal isnt unethically collected and is given enough space and stimulation to live a comfortable life, I dont see an issue. Now, that space and care will vary from species to species.

Zoos are fine as long as there's a legitimate reason why the animal can't be out in the wild or for conservation purposes.

I love animals and zoos often make me sad. However, most people don't understand that a good chunk of zoos and aquariums (if AZA certified) are not just for entertainment. They are used for studying behavior and conservation, and many zoos also have live breeding programs for endangered species. There's also the argument that the public needs to see these animals in order to generate the interest in financially supporting conservation.

On an individual basis, I don't think you should own anything not domesticated obviously, but even birds give me a bit of ick.
