I was rooting for LilKirbs but guess he got beaten to it. He had 85+ hours in the level last I saw.

That's nothing. There's streamers who put in thousands of hours making these levels only for Nintendo to just say fuck it and delete them.

It's probably the one thing that sucks about the digital age. And it's also why creators are moving to just creating their own roms rather than using the Nintendo licensed games to do it. A rom can last for ever. The first Kaizo game is still floating around. Nintendo on a whim however can just delete everything.

Wha? I just watched a video about how it was uploaded via TAS and theorized to be impossible for a human.

To be fair, those levels tend to be high-quality troll levels. Like, the GOOD troll levels that are more like puzzles than not. And often have QOL things like separating trolls into segments with each one having a red coin to reach, to limit how much you replay when you die, as well as creative use of red coin mechanics to essentially have more than 2 checkpoints (certain red coin behavior can be used to decide between two switch states upon respawning at a check point, and many red coin troll levels use this to give you a free key if you die after going through the red coin key door to the final segment for example).

Here is an example of someone playing a GOOD troll level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkTHhk07nv4

The techniques that the troll community have come up with to make some of their trolls work is really impressive.

Impressive, though not near as hard as what was done here nor as hard as other "super insane" stages (Barb's nonsense comes to mind).

It was always "theoretically" possible; given that a human would have machine-level execution

and 'lo and behold, it is done

TAS doesn't mean impossible for human by default. It's only impossible when:
  1. The input itself is impossible (like pushing left & right at the same time)
  2. The task requires something not humanly possible (e.g. "spam this button nonstop for 22 days")
  3. There's a RNG factor and no way to manipulate RNG
  4. The TAS uses low level memory exploits that a normal player has no visibility into
Anything that can be done once can be done multiple times. People had long gotten the first jump right which meant all they had to do was do it again 3 more times. I'd say it's about as difficult as pulling off 4 Evo moment #37s in a row. That's really all you're doing. Several consecutive frame perfect inputs.

I thought the rule was that if a level was uploaded online for others to play, the creator of that level had to first beat the level to prove it was possible to complete.

Is that not the case?

They used a modded console to play it as a TAS when uploading.

The creator beat it originally using TAS.

That is the case, but the creator spent 3 months trying to get some third party controller with macros to beat it or something.

This isn't correct you don't need a modded console to run TASbot or anything like it.

? Did they use TASbot? I was under the impression that the entire point of this stage was to say that they figured out how to do a TAS utterly unrelated to what others had done.

In the case of TAS only levels I think Nintendo should delete them. Making the levels humanly beatable was the concept behind the level creator needing to beat it before posting.

its true, but day 1 people have been putting in 'dev doors' to create evil levels and skip all of it via a hidden door at the beginning

I don't know exactly what the creator used, only that he confirmed it was a TAS. TASbot is the path of least resistance though so it doesn't make sense to use a modded console to do something the can do easier and without modding and then also use it on other consoles.

Oh, and apparently the "Is SMM Beaten Yet" site considers Trimming the Herbs--previously removed from their running due to it being a TAS--as a 101% clear.
