I think they are even illegal here now, not sure if EU law or more regional. So, if you want a bag in from a store, it will be a more expensive and big and durable one. Free plastic bags have been banned in Portugal for years now. The only free plastic bags that still exist are the ones to put fruit and vegetables in. When the law was first implemented I sure grumbled about it (I used to use the grocery bags as my trash can bags, now I buy actual trash bags), but you get used to it and it's a good habit to bring a bag along when shopping. --- Sir Markham pointed out, drinking another brandy.
