I need to get an original DS so I can play Pokemon Black. I went to a bunch of stores, but all they had were either DSis or DS Lites. If I can't find an original DS, should I settle for a DSi?

There was this gorgeous green DSi released in European markets back in the day, which I was extremely tempted to get just for that amazing color. Don't know why the ds lite never got such a color

Why do you want on original over the DSi?

Depends on what you want. Black 2 and White 2 have exclusive functionality with the 3DS via Pokemon Dream Radar, and Gen IV games have exclusive functionality with the original DS/lite via Pal Park for transferring from Gen III. The DSi is definitely the best system purely for playing Black/White due to screen size and no pixel distortion from the 3DS models (I cannot possibly stress how absolutely crisp Gen V looks on a DSi), but you should keep the others in mind as well.

This. Never got the appeal of the DSi. I want the GBA slot. Was there even any must have DSi app in the store? I couldn't care less about the camera too.

Why would you want an original DS when the DS Lite is objectively superior? I owned both so I know from first-hand experience the DS Lite is the one to go with.

So I'd say to go with either a DS Lite (so you get GBA and DS compatibility) or some member of the 3DS family (so you get DS, DSi, and 3DS compatibility). Not much reason to get a DSi in my opinion.

If you want to transfer from Gen 3 upwards, you are going to need an original DS or lite.

To be completely honest, I completely forgot that the DSi even existed as a step between the DS and 3DS.

Well in that case I think it really only comes to down to the DS Lite being compatible with the few DS games that required the use of slot 2 (aka the GBA slot) but the DSi supporting modern Wi-Fi encryption standards, neither of which matter much today.

I'd still go with the DS Lite personally.

Either one would be fine if you want a DS - both options are better than the original phat DS.

The DS Lite has the GBA slot if you want more access to games, which is a nice touch, but neither matters if you're only current goal is to play Pokemon Black.

If you want to transfer pokemon from your Gen 3 games (RSE/FRLG) to Gen 4 (DPPt/HGSS) you will need a DS with the GBA slot included however.

If you are more technologically inclined, you can do some wacky stuff with the software of a DSi that you can't with a DS Lite.

The original DS looks so washed out compared to the DS Lite. Plus, it's so bulky. I remember upgrading to the DS Lite, and it made a world of a difference.

Funny enough, I was searching for something a week ago or two ago and ended up randomly finding my cobalt blue DS Lite (wasn't lost, but was put away a long time ago and haven't touched it in a decade probably). I also found my Pokemon Black in a different spot right after. Not sure why it wasn't in its case, but it was in a small tin box on my game shelf. I didn't think to check the file to see what was on it.

Just get a 3DS. With a little zero-effort elbow grease you have access to the entire 3DS, DS, and GBA library natively.

Whichever ds you get op. Get the XL version. The ds lite doesnt have one I think. The DSI has one, as well any of the 3DS models

if you like the bulky feeling of the original ds while feeling more modern you willl definitely enjoy the XL models
